Education < Inspiration

I came across this link of a high School Valedictorian’s Speech. It is more inspiring than any I’ve ever heard, not so much for the words she chose but for the truth in them. Our School system’s repress our abilities to grow as individuals and lack the encouragement our children need to become connected with themselves. Workhorses in training and full of unnecessary facts. History may be important, so as not to repeat it.. the bad things that is. She is right in saying so much knowledge is crammed in, not allowing students the time to think or ask questions. We need an overhaul!!!!

She portrays how I felt through school, towards the “intellectual do gooders” I shared the classroom with. I always felt I should have been spending more time on creative things, rather than the 6 other classes i had.

“But I contest that I am a human being, a thinker, an adventurer – not a worker. A worker is someone who is trapped within repetition – a slave of the system set up before him. But now, I have successfully shown that I was the best slave. I did what I was told to the extreme. While others sat in class and doodled to later become great artists, I sat in class to take notes and become a great test-taker. While others would come to class without their homework done because they were reading about an interest of theirs, I never missed an assignment. While others were creating music and writing lyrics, I decided to do extra credit, even though I never needed it.” – Erica Goldson
